Streets of Roses From a Rose

From the moment Marlene spotted me outside the whare she rushed over with a mountain of paper stapled together neatly.  “What’s this?” I asked stupidly as it had my name and ALEX handwritten with a red pen underneath.  “It’s your script dummy!”  Mars laughed off my profound loss of words.  And this is where my journey as a rose begun.

After reading the script and discussing with Marlene, my new director, friends, and future cast members, I realised the opportunity to be a part of a drama directed by our very own- Marlene.  It was something even I couldn’t pass up.  A feeling of excitement and uncertainty ran over me as I considered the possible outcomes and road ahead of me.  What had I got myself into?

Our first official meeting was in the staffroom at school on a weekend.  All the Roses gathered for the first time.  We were a room full of awkward young girls as we all became acquainted.  There were girls from Lincoln, girls that didn’t go to school anymore and one from Waitara, TARANAKI!!

Mar’s left us all together in the boardroom with a video camera and a few pieces of paper in case of emergency silence.  Two minutes later the room was filled with a murmur of gossiping and occasional roars of laughter.  Marlene and Cam (one of many film assistants) entered beaming.  This is when the hard work began.

It wasn’t soon out from that day that we shot our first scene, the fight scene.  It was scheduled for us to meet the start at 7pm.  When I arrived, the air was tingling cold but buzzing with excitement.  Every one laughed at each other’s costumes and even more about my hair!  We were in high spirits.  We were soon told to quieten and had to put our abilities to the test.

The experience as a Rose with exciting, fun and a lot of hard work.  I learnt mostly about the difficulties that a director has to overcome.  As an actor, the biggest experience how to adjust to conditions too!
